  1. I learnt the true meaning of feminism from Nicaraguan women. Whilst my western counterparts complained that women do most domestic work as a form of “oppression”, the Nicaraguan feminist women turned the point on its head, “look how strong we are, yes we do most domestic work, work in the coffee plantations, bring up the children and fought alongside men in the revolution”. It was never an attack on men, simply pride in the strength of women. I’ve never forgotten this and made it my mantra, proud of women’s strength.

    1. Well said, Rachel. I admire Gioconda Belli’s work but she is a product of the Nicaraguan elite, and her recent comments reflect that of course.
